Roger McKnight is a professor emeritus in Scandinavian Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College. He has degrees from Southern Illinois University (B. A., M.A.) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.) as well as completed studies at Gothenburg University in Sweden. A native of downstate Illinois, Roger has also taught in Chicago, Stockholm, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Roger has written extensively about the Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg as well as about Swedish-American social history and literature. Like the author Moberg, he has often focused his research on the underdogs and common working people among the Swedes and Swedish Americans. His documented book
Severed Ties and Silenced Voices is the result of six years' research in Swedish and American archives. The book traces the lives of two Swedish immigrant families in southern Sweden and the American Midwest between the 1850s and 1920. Most recently Roger has written about public health nursing and poor relief among unemployed adults and abandoned children in the Swedish neighborhoods of Minneapolis between 1890 and the 1930s.
